Admissions officers review and make decisions on thousands or sometimes more applications in a short period of time. They are under enormous pressure to assess the applicant pool in order to produce the best class and the best campus community possible. How you apply, when you apply, and what you say all impact whether you receive an acceptance or a denial.
What factors in to the increasingly selective college application process?
Laying the Foundation:
A student’s record inside and outside the high school classroom demonstrates to admissions officers the kind of contributions he or she will make at the college level. Colleges are looking for candidates who perform consistently well or show a record of improvement in rigorous or college-prep courses. This means the right coursework, good grades, and activities that have a positive impact should be a continuous focus throughout high school.
Finding the Right Fit for College
No matter the grades, the scores, or the goals, there is a school out there for everyone.
Every college and university throughout the country is unique in mission, composition, and character, but they all share a common goal: finding students who are the best “fit” for their respective campuses.
Admissions officers read each application with a goal of finding students who will contribute to their campus. Some colleges are looking for students with stellar academic records and a passion for making their part of the world a better place. Others are looking for students who have demonstrated excellence in their particular subject matter or craft. Still others want to prepare students for future jobs or entrepreneurial pursuits.
But what does that really mean?

ProEd Helps Students Find Their Right Fit
At ProEd, we are confident that there’s a school for everyone — and we work to help students find that school. We help to understand their aspirations, dreams, and academic and extracurricular interests, and we help them find the schools that meet these. And when the match — or in most cases, matches — has been made, we make sure students craft applications that speak to their “fit” on that specific campus; that illustrate why they merit strong consideration.
It’s an art, really. But an art in which the ProEd expert team has had plenty of practice.
With wise experienced counsellors with direct, extensive experience with the Common Application, UCAS and various Universities worldwide, ProEd’s consulting experts know what colleges are looking for. Applications are always approached with an overall plan that includes goals for crafting a unique, personal background that demonstrates the student’s match for that college. The more successfully a student portrays that he or she has the academics, achievements, or goals that a college seeks, the better the chances that they will be admitted.
