What is the Difference between a Public and Private University?
Many of the US’ highest-ranked universities are classified as private universities, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Yale University. However, while the resources available to the country’s top private institutions can mean that they dominate the upper echelons of university and college rankings, the best public universities in the US such as University of California (Berkeley, Los Angeles, Davis, etc), University of Michigan -AnnArbor, University of North Carolina -Chapel Hill, should not be overlooked.Every US state is required to have at least one public university, although some of the larger states may have many public universities. Such institutions will often offer discounted tuition for in-state students. While public universities might be less expensive, private universities tend to be more geographically diverse as the tuition is the same price for students regardless of whether they live in the state that the university is in.
